Manhattan em uma canção

A canção Manhattan, da autoria de Lorenz Hart e Richard Rodgers e lançada em 1925, é linda. Ok, melodia, interpretações... mas torna-se mais linda quando acompanhamos a letra e passeamos por esta ilha, parte da cidade de Nova York. Além de Manhattan, a cidade é composta ainda de mais quatro boroughs: Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island - citada na canção - e The Bronk (sim, tem o "The", não me perguntem "why").

A canção aparentemente descreve atrações maravilhosas de Manhattan para um jovem casal sem grana. A piada é que essas maravilhas são umas das piores ou mais baratas atrações que a cidade pode ofertar. Por exemplo, o mau cheiro do metrô no verão é descrito como uma brisa amena. O forte barulho dos carrinhos sendo arrastados em Mott Street é retratado como um som de deslizamento suave. No início da canção, contam que para não gastar muito, decidem ficar na cidade mesmo.  Viajar para Niagara Falls nem pensar!

Manhattan foi composta em duas partes: "verse" (verso) e "chorus" (refrão).

Um verso é uma parte da música que parece um poema. A letra não é repetida ao longo da canção. Já o "chorus" é repetido algumas vezes. É a parte que nos faz lembrar da canção. É bem mais dinâmico e com mais atividade e instrumentalização que o verso.

A parte do "verse" nem sempre é cantada em algumas versões, por exemplo a de Dinah Washington. Na versão de Ella Fitzgerald podemos escutá-lo logo no início. Escutem mais abaixo.
